While you can always mix whey protein with warm water, most people are not big fans of lukewarm protein shakes, so they will need to get a blender to get the best mix when using cold water. Also, besides the plain protein and water mix, many people like to mix their protein with berries, coconut water, yogurt, almond milk, kale, or any other number of things. This requires a blender. So, to break it down:
Water (Room Temp) + Whey= Shaker Cup Is Fine
Water (Cold)+Berries/Yogurt/Almond Milk/Etc= Bullet Blender
Oats=Vitamix is the best. But it is doable with a good bullet blender.
Whey+Fruits(besides berries)/Veggies/ and Water= Top Of The Line Blender
This article will give you three options. The first one is going to be the classic shaker bottle, except it comes with a blender ball in the shaker that will help mix everything up. This is great for those whey formulations that tend to clump up.
Best For Just Whey Protein and Water: Shaker Cup with Ball Design
This design is great. It’s BPA free, so you don’t have to worry about unhealthy chemicals leaching into your protein shake.
It also doesn’t have phthalates.
It is dishwasher safe, which is perfect for cleaning out the bottle.
The ball or whisk design is perfect for helping break up the whey so you don’t get clumps.
Best Blender For Whey+Water and Yogurt/Blueberries
If you make protein shakes with things like berries (anything from blueberries, raspberries, blackberries) and yogurt, then will need a blender. You can’t blend up berries or bananas, or yogurt in a shaker bottle. You need a blender. The perfect blender for this purpose is a bullet style blender. These blenders will smooth out the berries, bananas, and yogurt and turn everything into a very smooth mess.
Best Blender For Protein + Fruits or Veggies Or Oats
If you’re planning on blending up oats (excellent at helping reduce cholesterol according to major studies) or veggies, including leafy greens like kale or spinach, and fruits like bananas, apples, or avocados, you should get a powerful blender. The worst thing in the world is to get a sludgy smoothie with stuff that was not broken down. It’s a big turn off, not to mention a pain to drink.
And, as good as the smaller bullet blenders are with some things, they simply are not the best blenders for the job if you’re blending protein powder with oats, fruits, kale, coconut water, milk, almond milk, etc… A powerful blender (my personal choice for the best blender is the Vitamix) is really your only choice. A smaller, bullet blender is simply not going to get the job done. It won’t blend up the material into a smooth, drinkable protein shake/smoothie. You will end up with lots of little blended bits.
This particular Vitamix is my favorite. It’s big enough so that you can make a big smoothie and put some away for later. That’s a great time saver. Listen, most people don’t have the time to make two or three smoothies with protien powder. What they can do is make one big batch and put the remainder in the fridge for later.
This is also the best blender for protein powder if you are also going to add seeds. We already mentioned kale, other leafy greens, fruits (everything from pineapple to bananas), and oats…but don’t forget seeds. You can add chia seeds, sunflower seeds, cashews, or anything else. This is a great way to get some healthy fats into your protein shake. Of course you can add in coconut oil (to get that healthy saturated fat) but coconut oil tends to harden in the cold water. This is why many people like to blend up some nuts or avocado to get that healthy essential oils and fat into the protein shake.
These are also perfect if you are ever going to make a green smoothie. Stuff like kale shakes or green smoothies are things you can only make in a blender like this Vitamix.
Another thing that is easy to blend up with the vitamix are oats, which are an excellent source of quality protein (around 5 grams per half cup) and also quality carbs because, don’t forget, carbs are not the bad guy. You actually need carbs in your diet, especially post workout. And oats have a super nutrient profile, so adding some oats and peanut butter along with the berries or bananes is great. The vitamix will blend it all up super easy.
Really, if you’re going to be serious about changing your diet and lifestyle, then you should consider getting the Vitamix. It is, without question, the best blender on the market for protein shakes or green smoothies, or anything else you are looking to turn into a delicious smoothie.
