Chia seeds are one of the best and healthiest foods to gain popularity in recent years, but they are a bit difficult to use if you’re unfamiliar with them. They basically look like little grains of sand or rock. For people who are die hard blender users, they might wonder if they can blend chia seeds in smoothies. It’s a good question because chia seeds appear to be one of the best things to add to your morning fruit smoothie, or even your afternoon lunch smoothie.
Chia seeds have a ton of natural nutrients, which make them perfect for blending in a smoothie. They are also loaded with vegan protein, which makes them indispensable for anyone who is looking to lose some fat and put on some muscle. The tricky thing, which we have already mentioned, is that in their raw state they are a bit hard and not really easy to use.
So, read on to see how you can learn how to use chia seeds in your smoothies!
Can You Blend Chia Seeds In A Smoothie Raw?
Yes, you can, but it’s not something I would advise. The problem with raw chia seeds is that they are so hard. They won’t blend up properly and they will result in a smoothie that doesn’t have a nice texture. What you should aim for is something that has a smoothie, soft texture…which isn’t something that you will get if you blend raw chia seeds in a blender. The smoothie will have small granular bits of chia seeds floating around in it.
How To Prepare Chia Seeds For Your Smoothie
The best way to prepare your chia seeds for your smoothie is to soak them overnight. It’s best to find a glass container, put in a table spoon of raw chia seeds (make sure you’re getting an organic brand) and then add some filtered water. It can soak over night and when you take the jar out in the morning you will see that the chia seeds have gotten soft and mushy (this is the exact texture that you want for your smoothie).
At this point you can simply add the chia seeds to the smoothie with a spoon. For instance, i often make a morning smoothie using blueberries, bananass, coconut water, and yogurt. That smoothie becomes a power smoothie if you add in the soaked chia seeds. The reason is that chia seeds add a whole bunch of b-vitamins, omega fatty acids, and protein. So, you can skip adding protein powder to your smoothie on some days (because it’s good to get protein from whole foods whenever possible).
What Type Of Chia Seeds Should You Blend In A Smoothie?
The only type off chia seeds you should blend in a smoothie are the organic type. You don’t want to get seeds that have been sprayed with pesticides and chemicals. And the great thing about buying organic chia seeds for your smoothie is that it’s one of the few foods where most large retailers offer organic choices. Most people who are buying chia seeds want organic!
So make sure to buy organic, and soak them in filtered water. Then you can blend chia seeds in your smoothie and end up with an amazing power smoothie that has omega fatty acids, b-vitamins, and lots of healthy protein.
How I Blend Chia Seeds In My Ninja Blender
So, how exactly do I blend Chia seeds when making a smoothie?
First, I soak the Chia seeds overnight in water. I use filtered water.
Leave the chia seeds in a glass container and put them in the fridge. Make sure to use enough water so that all of the Chia seeds are covered.
Then, in the morning I use a spoon to mix the chia seeds up. Sometimes I will notice that not all of the chia seeds have soaked. That’s ok. Just keep on mixing it and put it back in the fridge.
If I can’t wait and I need to make a morning smoothie, I will just add the chia seeds as is to the smoothie. Otherwise, I wait a while and come back and make sure that the chia seeds have all soaked.
At this point you can add the Chia seeds to the blender with the other ingredients.
