Are Blenders Supposed to be Loud?

If you’re reading this post, then you are looking to buy a blender and want to know if it’s supposed to be loud.

Or maybe you have a blender and want to know if it’s supposed to be loud.

Well, first off let’s discuss the term loud. What exactly do you mean when you say something is loud?

There are different perceptions of sound. Some people think that any noise from a blender makes it loud. Not all blenders are loud.

For those people I would suggest that you need a specially designed “quiet blender”. These are made with soundproof cases that are designed to greatly reduce the sound from the blenders motor or blades.

However, not everyone will need to buy a special blender that has been designed to be sound proof. Those are pricey, so it’s not necessary unless you really have an aversion to noise.

But, let’s get back to the main question: are blenders supposed to be loud. No, they are not designed to be loud. But the sound they produce is a byproduct of blending.

 Why are Blenders Loud?

Blenders are loud because they have motors that spin the chopping blades. Juicers are also loud, unless you buy a slow press juicer. Juicers are also loud because they need a powerful motor to juice fruits and vegetables.

Blenders are similar. They require a strong motor to turn the blending blades. It’s not an easy task to take fruit like apples, pineapples, berries, peaches, or lemons and blend them up into a smoothie.

Likewise, it’s not an easy task to take vegetables especially leafy greens like kale or spinach and blend them up in a blender.

The sound of the fruit and vegetables being blended up causes noise.

Also, if you are someone who likes to blend frozen fruit, which I think is a good idea (frozen fruit is cheap, healthy, and eliminates the need for ice) then the sound of the frozen fruit will create noise.

There’s nothing wrong with frozen fruit causing a loud noise when blending. It’s part of the process. Unfortunately, blenders are not whisper quiet.

But the upside is that if you get a good blender such as a Bullet (a good one) a Vitamix, or a Ninja then you can blend fast. You won’t have to waste time blending things for a minute of more like you will with some of the cheaper blenders.

Are all Blenders Loud?

Not all blenders are loud, but all blenders make some noise.

I have a write up on the quietest blenders if you’re interested in reading it. What I write there covers some of the more quiet blenders that are designed for home use.

Now, the rule of thumb that I like to use is that the cheaper the blender, the louder it will be.

That’s reason number 5 thousand  😉 why I advise everyone to stay far away from cheap blenders.

Not only will cheap blenders break down fast, but they are not going to be a comfortable blender for you to use on a daily basis. They are simply too loud.

Part of the reason why cheap blenders are loud is a bit deceptive. It’s not that they are all just louder. Sure, some of them are. The real reason that cheap blenders are louder is that they rake longer to blend up fruit or vegetables.

If you get a good bullet blender, or a vitamix or ninja blender, they can blend faster than a cheap blender.

So, what’s actually happening is that the blender is not blending for as long a time.

Which is the Quietest Blender?

The quietest blender is going to be a blender that has a soundproofing design. These blenders are a bit more pricey than your average blender, even the more expensive blenders that you will see listed as the best in brand.

So, I would rank it as follows:

  • The Quietest Blender is a Blender with Soundproofing Design

After this blender, the next type of blender that you’d want to look at are the higher end Vitamix blenders or nice Bullet Blenders. The Vitamix blender is a quiet blender when you compare it to the loud cheap models, and it’s even quiet when you compare it to higher end blenders such as Ninjas.

The bullet blenders are not as loud because they have smaller motors. They don’t blend as much as the larger jar blenders, so they don’t have as large motors.

  • Vitamix Models and Bullet Blenders

The last type of blenders that I recommend are the Ninjas. However, if you’re really concerned about sound they might not be the best. They are quite loud. If you’re not making smoothies, then what I’d suggest is an alternative idea: stick blenders.

If you are making smoothies only for yourself and you have a good blending jar for your stick blender, then it’s actually something that you can use.

Loud Blenders vs Damaged or Broken Blenders That Sound Bad

So, it’s a good idea to discuss the difference between loud blenders that are working properly and blenders that are damaged. If the blender is loud because it’s blending up frozen fruit or ice cubes, then you don’t have any reason for concern.

If, however, the blender is damaged due to misuse or else it’s a cheap blender. You won’t tend to have issues with any of the main brands of blenders: Ninja, Nutribullet, Vitamix, and others in that range are all quality blenders.

However, if you’ve decided to buy a cheap blender that isn’t as quality as a Vitamix, BlendTec, Ninja, or one of the other standards that I suggest people look into, then you’re going to potentially have issues.
