Do Ninja Blenders Have Glass Pitchers

No, most Ninja blenders do not have glass pitchers, and experts will say there is a good reason.

Why Don’t Ninja Blenders Have Glass Pitchers?

(here’s a perfect example of a great, strong Ninja Blender-–which isn’t made with fragile glass. It’s what I have used for years)

Basically the whole objection to using glass in a Ninja blender comes down to safety. There are enough safety experts that advise not using a glass blender because of the potential for damage.

Remember, a blender uses metal blades to chop and dice items (fruit, nuts, berries, vegetables) at super high speeds.

The safety experts suggest that this is a potential problem.

The concern isn’t that fruit or vegetables will damage the glass. The concern is that if the person using the blender accidentally puts something into the blender that is metal, then there is the potential to break the glass.

While no one is going to intentionally put anything that is metal into a blender, sometimes it is beyond your control. Accidents can happen, and the safety experts want to make sure nothing happens.

While  strong glass is certainly available for kitchen appliances, it’s not something that you see in blenders or food processors that often.

Whereas glass cooking pots are somewhat common, anything that chops or blends is going to normally be a high strength plastic.

The potential damage that a shattered blender can pose outweighs the downsides of using plastic.

Are There Any Ninja Blenders That Have A Glass Pitcher?

Yes. For a long time Ninja blenders didn’t come with the option of a glass blending jar. But that’s now changed. There are models that Ninja has introduced that do have glass blending jars.

For instance, you can see that this Ninja model, which is designed for using with hot foods and hot liquids.

This Ninja blender not only has a glass pitcher, but it’s suitable for blending hot liquid. I can’t stress enough how important it is to only blend hot liquids in a blender that is capable.

I like using regular Ninja blenders, but they are mostly not capable of blending hot liquid. If you really must use a blender to blend hot liquid, you will want the glass model Ninja blender.

What Are Ninja Blender Pitchers Made From?

Ninja blenders are made from high quality plastic. These are made with BPA free materials, so you do not have to be worried about any of the toxins that are normally associated with plastics.

In fact, most blenders in the higher price point (Vitamix, Ninja, BlendTec) won’t use anything like BPA.

Basically, BPA is a death sentence for a company that markets a health food related product.

The plastic in the Ninja blender series will not contain harmful chemicals that have been warned about for years.

However, be careful about blending hot liquids in a Ninja blender as they are not designed to handle that. It has less to do with the blender jar not being glass and more to do with the heat creating suction and the blender jar not being designed to handle that.

Does That Mean Glass Blender Pitchers Are Unsafe?

Not necessarily. There are some companies that do make glass pitchers for blenders. They have obviously spent time studying the matter and have come to the conclusion that it is not unsafe.

The main issue when using a glass blending jar is that you need to be very aware of what you put into it.

The biggest potential problem when using a glass blender pitcher is that a piece of metal might accidentally get into the jar.

How might this happen? Well, normally it’s on accident. Sometimes, incredibly rarely, if you are using bagged frozen fruit of bagged pre-washed veggies, there might be something in there from the factory. It’s super rare, but that’s the concern.

The other issue is that should you drop the glass pitcher in your kitchen, it will shatter.

Personally, I have no issue using a plastic blender jar.

I don’t blend soups in them when the soup is hot (I will blend cooled down soup). Instead, if I need to blend hot soup I will use an immersion blender.

What Brands Make Glass Blender Pitchers?

While the big names in blender tend to steer clear of glass pitchers, that’s not true of all blenders. There are companies who have decided that it is safe to use glass blenders.

The main brands that make blenders with glass pitchers are:

Oyster, Hamilton Beach, and Black and Decker.

These are all super popular blenders that millions of people use, so it’s safe to say that they are not very dangerous.

Personally, I am more of a fan of the Vitamix and Ninja brands for large blenders, and the stick immersion blender design for making soup.

If you’re going to buy a blender that uses a glass design–then stick with a Vitamix or Ninja. It’s not worth spending the money on an off brand.

Is Steal a Better Blender Pitcher Design Than Glass or Plastic?

So, while some people are ok with using a plastic pitcher, others don’t want to use any plastic when blending.

I understand that. Even though the plastic isn’t BPA plastic, there are still some legitimate concerns about using any type of plastic.

This is especially true when you are blending anything that is acidic. So, if you are planning on blending lemons or pineapple or anything else that has an acidic base, then it makes sense to be cautious.

Well, there are alternatives and one of them is metal.

Metal is expensive, more expensive than plastic obviously, and so you are only going to find it used in top of the line blenders.

Vitamix offers a stainless steel container that you can use. And Oyster even has gotten in on the action offering a metal blending jar.

Below is a sample of the options you have if you don’t want to use a plastic or a glass blending jar. Here’s a good jar that is made with BPA free material…so if you’re not using hot liquids, this would be a good option.

What Type of Plastic Are Ninja Blenders Made From?

The non-metal and non-plastic Ninja blenders are made with a BPA free type of plastic.

As you well know, plastic is not healthy, but if you must use a plastic appliance, make sure it’s BPA free.

I use a Ninja blender with a plastic jar (and have used other brands as well) and I don’t have any issue recommending them as long as you are not:

  • Blending Hot Liquid
  • Blending Acidic Material

If you are going to do that, then you need to have a blender that is designed differently. One with a glass jar would work better.

And that’s not just my opinion, if you read the official reviews from the company, then you will see the same suggestion.

Most Ninja blenders (unless they are advertised as handling hot liquid) should not be used with hot liquids.

My Take on Blenders with Glass Jars

My thoughts are as follows.

First, I am not a big fan of plastic. It’s just not a natural substance and there is enough negative associations with using plastic that you should steer clear of it.

That said, if you are not using a blender to blend hot liquid, or blend anything acidic, then I think using a plastic container that is BPA free is fine.

What you should do is follow the following:

  1. Never use hot liquids in a plastic blending jar
  2. Never store your blender in the fridge with liquid in it
  3. Don’t scratch the inside of the blending jar with Brillo

The second point is an important one and one that I want to spend a bit of time addressing. If you store a smoothie in the fridge in a blending jar that is made of plastic, then yes..you are risking getting some plastic leakage into the drink.

I don’t suggest that you store a smoothie or anything in a blender. Blenders are not meant to store liquids in them. For that, I suggest using glass in the form of a good mason jar.
